A powerful populist message...

Charles Pierce writes that he doesn’t know if the DJT campaign found a new speechwriter or his staff found the right dosage, but Pierce highlighted a new message from Donald Trump’s speech in New Hampshire.  It has some resonance:

We will rebuild our roads, our bridges, tunnels, highways, airports, schools, and hospitals. American cars will travel the roads. American planes will soar the skies and American ships will patrol the seas. American steel will send skyscrapers—new, beautiful skyscrapers—into the clouds. American hands—hands, hands, hands! – will rebuild this nation. And American energy, harvested from American sources, will power this nation. American workers will be hired to do the job, not workers from other country. We will put new American steel into the spine of the United States. I will fight for every neglected part of this nation.

Of course, I loved the “green energy jobs” that Hillary brought up in the debate.  Now I’m hoping she’ll wrap some more descriptive, moving, inspiring verbiage around it to bring it alive to people.

I mean, he’s hawking steel and other nostalgic 19th and 20th century technologies.  But the 21st century technologies grow from creating (and re-creating) the digital environment, bringing scientific advances into clinical and medical use, and building the technologies to make clean power — these are the real future.

However, what is undeniable is the way the snippet the nativist dream of his followers.  And I’m hoping Hillary will capture the American dream of the unfolding future, with its hope for progress and betterment of all.

<fingers crossed mode=ON>
