What do you think that the ideal immigration policy for the US should be?
Personally, I think that the Democrats are moving in the right direction in regards to this, with Joe Biden’s proposed immigration reforms—though I am unsure as to just what the odds of these reforms actually passing right now actually are. I do think that the US can benefit from a lot of high-skilled immigration—similar to Canada and Australia—but I also acknowledge that even for low-skilled immigrants, the US represents a promise of a better life and a better future. Thus, I’m all in favor of having a very generous immigration policy towards high-skilled immigrants but also being willing to accept as many low-skilled immigrants as we can (and also to give amnesty to the illegal immigrants who are already here, at least so long as they aren’t serious criminals) so long as they are non-criminals, willing to assimilate, and avoid overburdening our social safety net too much. (I think that people such as Bryan Caplan are idiots. He advocates for open borders but also advocates in favor of denying immigrants and their descendants voting rights FOR GENERATIONS. Does he not see the risk of eventual extremely massive social unrest and even an eventual revolution in this policy proposal of his? People generally don’t like being an inferior hereditary caste for generations, after all!) But Yeah, anyway, I do think that the US’s doors should be open to a lot of people who genuinely want to become Americans and to contribute to our great country. I think that Donald Trump’s immigration policies were obviously both too restrictive and too heartless and I’m glad that Joe Biden beat Donald Trump in 2020 and began reversing Trump’s immigration policies after his (Biden’s) inauguration.
For what it’s worth, I voted for Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primaries in both 2016 and 2020 and I think that his views and platform on immigration were indeed correct.
